Teacher of the Year

Jill Russell has been named Teacher of the Year at Thomas County Middle School, a well-deserved honor for an educator whose dedication to students has spanned nearly three decades.
Mrs. Russell began her teaching career in 1999 at Central Middle School after graduating with honors from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Twenty-seven years later, she proudly continues to serve Thomas County Schools—teaching business education for grades 5 through 8 and coordinating athletics at TCMS.
Her business education courses include keyboarding, business communication, marketing, financial literacy, and career exploration, helping students build real-world skills that prepare them for success. In addition to her classroom teaching, Mrs. Russell has served in numerous leadership and mentoring roles, presenting professional development for regional education agencies, Thomas County Schools, and organizations such as the Georgia Science Teachers Association.
Mrs. Russell holds certifications and endorsements in Business Education, Science, Health, Physical Education, Reading, Special Education, and Gifted Education. She is Project Lead the Way certified and a train-the-teacher facilitator for Botvin Life Skills. Her passion for student well-being has led her to secure multiple grants focused on social, emotional, and physical wellness, including recognition that allowed her to represent Thomas County at the SHAPE America National Conference.
Her teaching philosophy centers on inclusivity and accountability. As she explains, “Accountability isn’t something you do to someone—it’s something you do for someone. There is a place for everyone in this world, and I am honored to help children find their way.”
Mrs. Russell credits her inspiration to become a teacher to Kathleen Cunningham, a parent who showed unwavering belief in her child’s potential. That lesson in celebrating small victories continues to guide Mrs. Russell as she encourages her own students to grow academically and personally.
She says the most rewarding part of teaching is watching students transform from 5th graders into confident 8th graders. One memorable moment came when a former student surprised her with news of his acceptance into medical school—crediting a 7th-grade science experience in her classroom for sparking his passion.
Known for her collaborative approach, Mrs. Russell connects lessons across subjects, helping students see how learning is interwoven. Her goal is simple but powerful: to make a lasting impression on students, not just academically, but as compassionate, responsible people.
After 27 years of service—all with Thomas County Schools—Mrs. Russell continues to inspire colleagues and students alike. TCMS is proud to celebrate her commitment, leadership, and heart for education as Teacher of the Year.
